Eizaburo Ueno

Year of birth: 1871 (4th year of the Meiji era)
He was an agricultural scientist during the Meiji and Taisho periods. He is also famous as the owner of the bronze statue of "Hachiko, the faithful dog" that stands in front of Shibuya Station in Tokyo. He was born in Mie Prefecture and graduated from the College of Agriculture of the Imperial University in 1895. He was appointed an engineer at the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, and studied abroad in Germany, France, and the United States, before becoming a professor at his alma mater's College of Agriculture when a new agricultural engineering course was established. In addition to laboratory work, he was involved with the Land Consolidation Association, contributing to the field of land improvement, such as land consolidation and irrigation and drainage, from the perspective of an agricultural scientist, and was the head of the judging committee for invention prizes for powered threshers and powered rice hullers, sponsored by the Agricultural Association of Japan. He collapsed from a cerebral hemorrhage while doing research at the university, and was never seen in good health again in front of his beloved dog.

明治大正期の農学者。東京渋谷の駅前に建つ銅像「忠犬ハチ公」の飼い主としても有名である。三重県生まれ。明治28(1895)年帝大農科大学を卒業。農商務省技師に就任したり,ドイツ,フランス,アメリカなどに留学したのち,母校の農科大学に新しく農業工学講座が設置されるにともない,その教授となった。研究室の仕事ばかりでなく,耕地整理協会にかかわり耕地整理や灌漑排水など土地改良の分野に初めて農学者の立場から貢献したり,大日本農会が主催する発明懸賞募集動力脱穀機や動力籾摺機などの審査長を引き受けるなど幅広い活動をした。大学で研究中に脳溢血で倒れ,再びその元気な姿を愛犬の前に現すことはなかった。
