A village in Minamitsugaru district, southern Aomori prefecture. Population 3674 (1995). Occupying the mountainous area upstream of Hirakawa, a tributary of Iwaki river, it borders Akita prefecture. Ikarigaseki, the center of the village, is written as "Ikari no Seki" in "Tsugarugunchu Myoji" written in the Tenbun era (1532-55). After the Ushu Kaido was opened as a route for alternate attendance in the early modern period, the Tsugaru feudal lord's "temporary residence" was established there, and a guard post was established there, which is one of the three Tsugaru checkpoints along with Omagoshi and Nonai. Nearly 90% of the village area is covered by forests, most of which are national forests, and agriculture only produces a small amount of rice and apples.
