King of the Lombards. Reigned 636-652. He was the last of the Lombard kings to hold fast to the traditions of Germanic rulers and the Arian faith before their conversion to Catholicism, and there are many anecdotes about his strict rule. He conquered and took possession of the remaining Byzantine territories in northern Italy, and also worked hard to solidify the foundations of his kingdom domestically. However, what made him famous above all else was the result of the tribe's first legislative project, the Edictum Rothari (643).

ランゴバルド王国の王。在位636‐652年。カトリックへの改宗に先立つ時期のこの部族の歴代の王の中では，ゲルマン人支配者の伝統とアリウス派キリスト教の信仰を固く守り続けたほとんど最後の人物で，その厳格な支配にまつわる挿話は数多い。イタリア北部に残存したビザンティン帝国領を征服，領有したほか，内政面でも王国の基礎固めに尽力したが，何よりも彼の名を高からしめる結果となったのは，この部族の初の立法事業の成果である〈ロターリ王法典Edictum Rothari〉(643)である。
