Year of birth: Unknown. A Buddhist sculptor in the mid-Heian period. In 1040, he painted the Five Great Deities for Fujiwara no Sukefusa's son. In 1048, he copied the portrait of the Hosso founder in the Great Buddha Hall of Todaiji Temple as a model for painting the statue of the Hosso sect's founder on the pillar of the Kondo (Golden Hall) of Kofuku-ji Temple. In 1068, he was awarded the title of Hokkyo as a reward for the more than 100 joruri-sized painted Buddha statues that were donated to Hosho-ji Temple at the request of Go-Reizei-in. This was the first time that a Buddhist sculptor in the Buddhist sculptor's rank was appointed to the rank of Sogo (Shoreisho, Vol. 1). In 1071, he painted a mandala for the Anchin Goshuho ceremony in the Daidairi Jinjuden Hall, and the design is recorded in the Anchinho Nikki (Diary of Anchinho). He is considered one of the leading Buddhist sculptors in the Sekkan period, but none of his works remain. 平安中期の絵仏師。長久1(1040)年,藤原資房の子のための五大尊像を描く。永承3(1048)年,興福寺金堂の柱に法相宗の祖師像を描くため,その手本として東大寺大仏殿の法相祖師影像を図写している。治暦4(1068)年,後冷泉院御祈により法成寺で供養された百余体の丈六の仏絵像の賞として法橋に叙された。これは絵仏師が僧綱の位に叙任された最初の例である(『初例抄』上)。延久3(1071)年,大内裏仁寿殿の安鎮御修法の曼荼羅を描き,その図様が記録されている(『安鎮法日記』)。摂関期を代表する絵仏師のひとりとみられるが,その作品は現存しない。仏師定禅の父。<参考文献>亀田孜「奈良時代の祖師像と倶舎宗曼陀羅図」(『仏教芸術』1号)
