Russko‐kitaiskii bank (Russian‐Chinese name)

A Russian bank founded at the end of the 19th century. It was established in order to strengthen economic relations with China in connection with the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway, and thereby to increase Russia's influence over China in opposition to Britain. It opened in January 1896. Under the initiative of the Tsarist government, it was formed as a joint-stock company with investments from a French banking group and the Russian International Commercial Bank. Until 1906, the Tsarist government owned most of the shares issued, totaling 15 million rubles. Of the nine (later 11) directors, three were from France and the rest were from the Russian Ministry of Finance.
