American psychologist. Founder of client-centered therapy or non-directive counseling. He has served as professor at the universities of Ohio, Chicago, and Wisconsin, and also served as president of the American Association of Applied Psychology and the American Psychological Association. He believes that clients themselves have an inherent desire for growth or self-actualization, and that if given the appropriate therapeutic context, they will free themselves from symptoms and maladjustment and become closer to being "fully functioning individuals." He also emphasized the therapist's attitude that is necessary for such therapeutic change, and cited the therapist's own self-identity, unconditional positive regard for the patient, and appropriate empathic understanding.
