Iheya Island

Japanese: 伊平屋島 - いへやじま
Iheya Island

An island in the northern part of Okinawa Prefecture, it is one of the Iheya Izena Islands. It is also the main island of Iheya Village. Its area is 20.59 square kilometers. The highest point is Mount Kayo, 294 meters high. The entire island is made up of Palaeozoic mountains, with small alluvial lowlands developing between the mountains. The coast is surrounded by fringing coral reefs, and the coastal sand dunes are well developed. Population 1,253 (2009).

沖縄県北部にある島で伊平屋伊是名諸島(いへやいぜなしょとう)の一つ。伊平屋村の主島でもある。面積20.59平方キロメートル。最高点は294メートルの賀陽(かよう)山。全島、古生層の山地からなるほかは、山地間に小規模な沖積低地が発達する。海岸は裾礁(きょしょう)のサンゴ礁で取り巻かれ、海岸砂丘の発達が顕著である。人口1253(2009)。
