Iga

Japanese: いが
Iga

It is part of the cupule, which is a modified form of the involucre leaves that encase the fruit of Fagaceae plants; cupules of the Chestnut genus in particular have sharp thorns and are commonly called burs. The cupule is formed when many scale leaves fuse together into a vase shape. Female chestnut flowers produce involucre leaves. As the numerous scale leaves ripen, the involucre leaves also grow larger, and branches appear between the scale leaves, which then branch out further, becoming sharp, thorn-like and forming burrs.
