Porous materials used for filtration. They range from natural materials such as gravel to highly processed products such as sintered metal perforated plates, but the most commonly used materials are woven fabrics of various fibers, filter paper, nonwoven fabrics such as felt, wire mesh (especially tightly woven ones like tatami weave), and mats of fibrous materials. Filtration is mainly used for solid-liquid separation, but the term filter media is also used for dry filter dust collection. In either case, the material must have low flow resistance for the fluid, form bridges on the pores of the filter media without clogging the pores, allow the accumulated cake layer to peel off easily, and have sufficient mechanical strength to withstand scraping and shaking off the cake and accumulated dust for a long period of time.

ろ過に用いる多孔性の材料。砂礫のような天然のものから，焼結金属多孔板のような高度の加工品まであるが，最も多くは各種繊維の織布，ろ紙，フェルトなどの不織布，金網(とくに畳織のように目の詰まったもの)，繊維状物質のマットなどが使われる。ろ過はおもに固‐液分離に用いられるが，ろ材という用語は乾式のろ過集塵（しゆうじん）にも使われている。いずれの場合も流体の流動抵抗が小さく，ろ材の細孔上で架橋を形成するが，孔の中で目詰りを起こさず，堆積したケーキ層が剝離（はくり）しやすく，かつケーキや堆積粉塵のかきとり，払落しにも長期間十分耐える機械的強さをもつことが要求される。
