Japanese: 土色 - どしょく（英語表記）soil colour

The color pattern shown in a soil profile. The color of the soil itself is not important, but it is used as an indicator of other soil properties (e.g., drainage quality, organic matter content, etc.). The elements that are most important in determining soil color are humus and iron, with high humus content resulting in a dark color and low humus content resulting in a light color. Iron is yellow-brown to reddish-brown in an oxidized state and blue-gray to gray in a reduced state. Manganese and calcium also play a role. Layers with uneven color are described in order of the amount of the layer with the greatest amount and the least amount, for example, "including miscellaneous colors and mottling." Color is described in the order of hue, value, and saturation using a soil color book using the Munsell system.

土壌断面中に示された色のパターン。土色自身は重要なものではないが，土壌の他の性質 (排水の良否，有機物含量など) の指標として用いられる。土色に関与する最も大きいものは腐植と鉄などで，腐植は含量が多ければ暗色を呈し，少ければ淡色になり，鉄は酸化状態では黄褐色から赤褐色を呈し，還元状態では青灰色から灰色を呈する。その他マンガン，カルシウムなども関与する。色が一様でない層については量の多いほうと少いほうの順に，「雑色，斑紋を含む」というように記述する。色は土色帳を用いてマンセル方式で色相・明度/彩度の順に記述する。
