Radiation measurements are conducted periodically or temporarily around facilities that handle radioactive materials, nuclear power plants, etc. Radiation is constantly monitored around facilities where there is a possibility that radiation or radioactive materials may leak into the general environment to prevent radiation damage to the general public. In addition, in the unlikely event of an accident that could result in a large release of radioactive materials, a system is in place for emergency monitoring over an even wider area. Radiation levels in the air, and concentrations of radioactive materials in the air and water are measured.

放射性物質を取り扱う施設，原子力発電所等の周辺で定期的，あるいは一時的に行なわれる放射線測定。放射線や放射性物質が一般環境に漏れる可能性がある施設の周辺では，一般公衆の放射線障害を防止するために常時放射線の監視を行なっている。また万一の事故により放射性物質の大量放出のおそれがある場合にはさらに広い範囲で緊急のモニタリングを行なう体制が整備されている。空間の放射線量，放射性物質の空気中，水中濃度等が測定される。
