Jāt - Jāt (English spelling)

Japanese: ジャート - じゃーと（英語表記）Jāt

A people living in the areas around Agra and Mathura in northern India. Like the Rajputs, they are said to be an imported tribe from western India. Unlike the Rajputs, they did not form a kingdom before the 18th century, but in the late reign of Aurangzeb (1658-1707), they rebelled and began to deal a blow to Mughal rule. Around the middle of the 18th century, they were unified under Suraj Mal and established a small kingdom consisting of the areas of Agra, Aligarh, Meerut, and Bharatpur as its capital.

北インドのアーグラ，マトゥラーの周辺地域にすむ人々。ラージプート同様，西部インドから入ってきた外来の部族といわれている。ラージプートとはちがって，18世紀以前には王国をつくらなかったが，ムガル朝アウラングゼーブ(在位1658‐1707)の時代後期になると反乱を起こし，ムガル統治に打撃を与えるようになった。18世紀半ばごろ，スラジ･マルSuraj Malのもとで統一され，バーラトプルBhāratpurに都をおき，アーグラ，アリーガル，メーラトなどの地域からなる小王国を建設した。
