Six works - Rokusaku

Japanese: 六作 - ろくさく

This is one of the rankings of artists from ancient times that has been handed down among early modern Noh mask makers, and refers to six people who rank second only to the Ten Saku. Depending on the manuscript, it may be Masuami, Chigusa, Fukurai, Hourai, Shunwaka, and Ishio(O)bei, but some sources consider Fukurai and Ishiobei to be the same person and add Sankobo in addition. In any case, they are slightly later in age than the Ten Saku, and can be considered artists from the Muromachi period. 近世の能面作家たちのあいだで伝承されてきた古い時代の作家の格付けの一つで，十作につぐ格のもの6人をいう。伝書によって異なるが，増阿弥，千種，福来，宝来，春若，石翁(王)兵衛などで，福来と石王兵衛を同一人としてほかに三光坊を加えるものもある。いずれにせよ十作よりやや年代的に下り，室町時代の作家と考えてよいであろう。彼らの作風はある程度推察できるが，その作品を同定することはまだむずかしい。【田辺三郎助】
