New and righteous path - Shinmei Masamichi

Sociologist. Born in Taipei on February 24, 1898. Graduated from the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Law, Tokyo Imperial University in 1921 (Taisho 10). Member of the Japan Academy, Professor Emeritus at Tohoku University. Studied by Yoshino Sakuzo, he was appointed professor of political science at Kansai Gakuin University, where he also taught sociology, which led to his interest in sociology. After moving to Tohoku Imperial University in 1926, he adopted a critical stance against formal sociology, established "behavior-relationship" as a key concept, and established the "synthetic sociology" system. His main works are "Basic Problems in Sociology" (1939) and "Essential Society" (1942), but after World War II he actively sought to critically introduce American sociology, and also made contributions to research on ethnic groups, ideologies, regions, and other subjects. He served as president of the Japanese Sociological Association and the Japanese Society for the History of Sociology, and made a great contribution to the development of Japanese sociology as a senior member of the field. He passed away on August 20, 1984.
