1613‐80 A French moralist, he was born in Paris to a distinguished noble family. He married at age 14 and entered military service at age 15. Like many of the military nobles of his time, he spent his days either fighting on the battlefield or engaging in love affairs and political intrigues at court. During the reign of Louis XIII, he was involved in numerous plots against Prime Minister Richelieu, and was briefly imprisoned in the Bastille and exiled. After Richelieu's death (1642), he returned to court, but when the Fronde rebellion broke out, he joined the rebel army with his mistress, the Duchess of Longueville.
