6-3 system - Rokusansei

Japanese: 6･3制 - ろくさんせい

It usually refers to a school system with six years of elementary school and three years of junior high school, as well as the current nine-year compulsory education system. In Japan, it can also refer to a broader school system of six years of elementary school, three years of junior high school, three years of high school, and four years of university, i.e., the 6-3-3 system or 6-3-3-4 system. The distinctive features of this education system are that three years of secondary education are open to all citizens based on the idea of equal educational opportunity, and that it is a single curriculum common to all citizens. The 6-3 system was established with the enforcement of the School Education Act in April 1947, and the new junior high school system was launched in the same year, the new high school system in the following year, and the new university system in 1949.

通常，小学校6年，中学校3年の学校体系をさすとともに，現行の9ヵ年義務教育制度をいう。日本では，広く小学校6年，中学校3年，高等学校3年，大学4年の学校制度，すなわち6･3･3制ないし6･3･3･4制を意味する場合もある。この教育制度の特色として，教育の機会均等の理念に基づいて3年の中等教育をすべての国民に開放したこと，また全国民に共通な単一の課程であることがあげられる。　6･3制は1947年4月学校教育法の施行により，新制中学校は同年から，新制高等学校は翌48年から，新制大学は49年から発足をみた。
