When trying to prove the cause of a human disease in court, the most direct proof would be to be able to provide detailed evidence of all the steps that lead to the disease. However, even if such direct proof is not sufficient, it may be possible to indirectly infer the cause of the disease by examining the onset of the disease and living environment of many patients. This method of proof is called epidemiological proof, because it applies the method of epidemiology, which seeks to clarify the cause and route of infection of a disease by observing it as a mass phenomenon, to court proof.

裁判において人の疾病の原因を証明しようとするとき，その原因が病気を引き起こすに至る過程のすべてを詳細に立証することができれば，最も直截な証明となる。しかし，たとえそのような直接的な証明が十分でなくても，多くの患者の発病状況や生活環境を調べることによって，その疾病の原因が間接的に推認できる場合がある。このような証明方法は，疾病を集団現象として観察することによってその原因や感染経路を明らかにしようとする疫学の方法を，裁判上の証明に応用したものであるから，疫学的証明と呼ばれる。
