…His paintings, unlike those of his predecessors, whose flower paintings conveyed a certain religious atmosphere, aimed to blend with the open space of Italian Baroque. Jan van Kessel (1626-79), the son of Jan’s daughter Pascacia, specialized in painting animals such as peacocks, lions, and leopards, and his paintings of insects, butterflies, and shells were magnificently depicted in a way that reminded one of the “illusion of reality.” Finally, David Teniers II, who married Jan’s daughter Anna, is usually considered to be a member of the Bruegel family, but 18th-century art critics considered him a better painter than Bruegel the Elder. …
