Fushiki

Japanese: 伏木 - ふしき
Fushiki
A district on the left bank of the Oyabe River estuary in Takaoka City, northwest of Toyama Prefecture. It was the first area to be developed in the prefecture, and was the site of the provincial capital, Kokubunji Temple, and Ichinomiya Shrine. Otomo no Yakamochi once stayed here as the governor of Etchu Province. Since the Edo period, it has developed as a port town, backed by shipping on the Oyabe River. After being designated an open port in 1899, it became one of the three ports on the Japan Coast, along with Niigata and Tsuruga. Modern industry began to develop here around the time of World War I, and chemical, steel, and paper and pulp factories were established behind the area. The port is mainly used by ships importing lumber, petroleum products, agricultural products, chemical fertilizers, and ores. It is one of the centers of the Toyama-Takaoka industrial region. It is famous for the Manyo Botanical Garden at the foot of Mt. Nijo and Shokoji Temple, a famous Shinshu temple. The coast is called Nago-no-ura, and Otomo no Yakamochi wrote about it in many of his poems.
