This mixed martial arts event was established to realize a match between professional wrestler Takada Nobuhiko and Brazilian Rickson Gracie, who was undefeated in 400 fights. Takada lost to Rickson at PRIDE 1 on October 11, 1997, and lost in the rematch the following year, but Takada's student Sakuraba Kazushi defeated Royce Gracie in 1999 and Royce Gracie in 2000, which made the event extremely popular. The event is held under mixed martial arts rules that allow for ground fighting and striking, allows knee kicks on the ground, and has a long first round of 10 minutes. In addition to the heavyweight division, a middleweight GP was held in 2003 and 2005, with Barcelona Olympic judo gold medalist Yoshida Hidehiko and others taking part, and the light and welterweight GP began in 2005 at the Bushido event, which is focused on the light and middleweight divisions. However, in June 2006, Fuji Television, which had been broadcasting the New Year's Eve "Otoko Matsuri" festival on terrestrial TV, notified Dream Stage Entertainment (DSE), the organizer, that it was terminating its contract. The group was at a crossroads.

プロレスラーの高田延彦と「400戦無敗」のヒクソン・グレイシー(ブラジル)の対戦を実現させるために発足した総合格闘技イベント。1997年10月11日の「PRIDE・1」で高田はヒクソンに敗れ、翌年の再戦でも敗北したが、高田の弟子の桜庭和志が99年にホイラー・グレイシー、2000年にホイス・グレイシーを破ったことで人気が爆発。寝技も打撃もありの総合格闘技ルールで、グラウンドでのひざ蹴りを容認し、最初の1ラウンドが10分と長いのが特徴。ヘビー級だけでなく、03、05年にはバルセロナ五輪柔道金メダリストの吉田秀彦らが参戦するミドル級GPを開催、中軽量級中心のイベント「武士道」でもライト、ウエルター級のGPを05年から始めた。しかし、06年6月、地上波で大晦日の「男祭り」などを中継してきたフジテレビが、主催するドリームステージエンターテインメント(DSE)に対し契約解除を通告。団体としての岐路に立っている。
