Alfred Firmin Loisy

French biblical scholar and religious scholar. He became a Catholic priest, studied at the Catholic University of Paris, and was appointed professor of Hebrew and later professor of biblical studies. His theories on the inspiration of the Bible, its inerrancy, and the origins of Christianity (he argued, in opposition to Harnack's ideas, that Christianity developed historically in a direction not foreseen by its founder, Jesus Christ), as seen in his Gospel and the Church (1902), were so controversial that five of his books were placed on the Index of Prohibited Books, and he was officially excommunicated in 1908, and he renounced the priesthood.
