A former town in Shimoge County, northern Oita Prefecture. Located in the middle reaches of the Yamakuni River, 80% of the town is forested, producing timber, shiitake mushrooms, tea, and other crops. Located in the center of Yabakei, it is home to Aonodomon Cave and Rakanji Temple. In March 2005, it was incorporated into Nakatsu City along with Yabakei Town, Yamakuni Town, and Sanko Village in Shimoge County. Area: 85.46 km2 . Population: 4,006 (2003).
