Japanese: 蓮如仮名法語 - れんにょかなほうご

In the mid-Muromachi period, the 8th abbot of Hongan-ji, Rennyo, sent messages of guidance on faith to his followers. These were compiled by his grandson Ennyo and first published by the 10th abbot, Shonyo. At Higashi Hongan-ji, they are called Ofumi, at Nishi Hongan-ji, Gobunsho, and are also called Gojo Shosoku. There are 80 letters compiled into five volumes, the first half of which was written while the abbot was in Yoshizaki, Echizen. The writing is simple overall and played a major role in spreading the sect's teachings. → Yoshizaki

室町中期，本願寺８世蓮如が門信徒に送った信仰上の指導となる消息を，孫の円如が編纂(へんさん)，10世証如が初めて版にしたもの。東本願寺では御文(おふみ)，西本願寺では御文章(ごぶんしょう)といい，五帖消息(ごじょうしょうそく)とも。80通が５帖にまとめられ，前半は越前吉崎にあるころ書かれたもの。全体に平易な文章で，宗義を広めるのに大きな力となった。→吉崎
