Two people playing one piano. The oldest example of this kind is said to be a three-hand piece written in England in the early 17th century, but full-scale duets were not written until the Classical period in the late 18th century. Duets became popular because they allowed for a wide range of tones and rich harmonies. Mozart and Schubert in particular left behind works that made use of the characteristics of duets. As the piano became more widespread in 19th century Europe, orchestral arrangements for duets came to occupy an important position in home music. As duets are also called four-hand pieces, they are usually played by two people on one piano, but there are also exceptions, such as works for four people on two pianos, eight people on four pianos, 16 people on eight pianos, and 31 people on 16 pianos.
