...In 1948-51, R. Florin proposed that the Cordaites were related to another large group of gymnosperms, the Cordaites, based on the study of many fossils from the Permian to Jurassic periods. On the other hand, with the discovery of the progymnosperms (also called protogymnosperms) by C.B. Beck (1960), it was proposed that both the Cycads and the Conifers were derived from the protogymnosperms, the Aneurophytonals and the Archaeopteris orders, respectively, and the phylogeny of gymnosperms is still debated today over whether it is monistic or dualistic.
