1240‐85 King of the Aragonese Confederation. Reigned 1276-85. Son of Jaime I. Nicknamed "The Great" for his achievements in conquering Sicily. When Pedro III ascended to the throne, the Aragonese Confederation was searching for new possibilities for development abroad. The defeat at Muret (1213) had closed the door to expansion into southern France, and the Treaty of Almisla (1244) with neighboring Castile had also prevented expansion south of Valencia, leaving only the Mediterranean as its borders. In 1282, in an uprising known as the "Sicilian Vespers," the people of Sicily rejected the traditional rule of the Angevins and asked Pedro III to govern the island.
