Recently, Alvin Gouldner has distinguished between the holders of these two types of knowledge as "technical intelligentsia" and "humanist intellectuals," and argues that both of them have come to constitute a new class, the "cultural bourgeoisie," bound together by the ideology of "cultural capital" and professionalism. Whether one agrees with this theory or not, the dialectical relationship of attraction and repulsion between these two intellectual classes, and the problem of their mutual penetration, must never be overlooked. …
