Physiology consists of basic physiology (or general physiology), which pursues the basic and elementary phenomena of life and the principles contained therein, and organ physiology, which examines the functions of various organs in the body individually. The former deals with membrane ion permeability, active transport, synaptic transmission, electrical generation, excitation, inhibition, etc. as its main subjects, while the latter examines the functions of each organ, such as the heart, brain, and kidneys, and seeks to clarify the characteristics of each as a functional system.
