In recent years, there have been repeated attempts to eliminate the term "hysteria" in order to eliminate the traditional prejudices and ambiguity of the concept. For example, in the third edition of the American Psychiatric Association's "Mental Disorders Manual," the functional (non-organic) physical symptoms of hysteria are incorporated into "conversion disorder," the mental symptoms of hysteria are incorporated into "dissociative disorder," and the hysterical personality is renamed "histrionic personality." *Some of the terminology that refers to "dissociative disorder" is listed below.
