Mount Mikuni

A peak in the Mikuni Mountains on the border between Gunma and Niigata prefectures. It is 1,636 meters above sea level. It was formed by the Miocene orogeny of the Tertiary Period, and is mainly composed of diorite, but the summit is made of mudstone with a long, somewhat flat surface running east to west. When viewed from the south, this looks like a hipped roof. From the entrance to the Mikuni Tunnel on National Route 17 (approximately 1,100 meters above sea level), go through Mikuni Pass and climb a steep slope to reach the summit. From here, there is a traverse route to Mt. Tanigawa, passing Mt. Tairapyo, Mt. Sennokura, Mt. Mantaro, and others. Due to the snow and strong winds, the flora is dominated by azalea shrubs and alpine flowers.

群馬と新潟の県境にある三国山脈の一峰。標高1636メートル。第三紀中新統の造山運動で形成され、おもに閃緑(せんりょく)岩からなっているが、山頂は泥岩で東西に長いやや平坦(へいたん)な面がある。これが南側から眺めると寄棟型の屋根に似て見える。国道17号の三国トンネル口（標高約1100メートル）から三国峠を経て急坂を登ると山頂に至る。ここから平標(たいらっぴょう)山、仙ノ倉(せんのくら)山、万太郎(まんたろう)山などを経て谷川岳への縦走路がある。植物相は雪と強風の影響でツツジ類の灌木(かんぼく)と高山性の草花が目につく。
