However, the House of Austria combined the Netherlands and the former Spanish territories in Italy, and in the same year, 1713, Charles VI enacted the Pragmatische Sanktion (Pragmatische Sanktion), which sought to make the vast hereditary territories indivisible and to allow the eldest son to inherit them, but since there were no male heirs, he made a series of concessions to allow his eldest daughter, Maria Theresa, to inherit the entire territory, and gained international recognition. However, when Frederick II the Great of Prussia occupied Silesia and Elector Karl Albrecht of Bavaria claimed the right of inheritance, Maria Theresa faced the War of the Austrian Succession in 1740.
