Regent (English spelling)

Regent (English spelling)
In the Dutch Republic, the city nobility participated in city, state, and national politics. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Netherlands was a federal state with no strong central government or bureaucracy, and city councils, state assemblies, and federal parliaments elected by a limited number of urban noble families essentially monopolized politics. Thus, the Regent is the term that best describes the domination of big merchants in Dutch politics during the republic.
