A go association in the Meiji and Taisho periods. It was the predecessor of the Nihon Ki-in. In April 1879, Nakagawa Kamesaburo, Kobayashi Tetsujiro and other volunteers called for the establishment of a study group, and it was established with the participation of the four Go schools, led by Murase Shuho (later the 18th Honinbo), but in September of the same year, the group split over the issue of rank, and the head of the school withdrew from the association and sought to have his license revoked. In May 1880, Houensha began to call itself a rank, and in July, Shuho became president and changed the organization from a study group to a new Go school. The journal Igi Shinpo was first published in 1879 and continued until 1924. After Shuho, the presidents were Nakagawa 2nd, Iwasaki Kenzo 3rd, Nakagawa 4th (the second Nakagawa, formerly Ishii Senji), Hirose Heijiro 5th, and Iwasa Kei 6th. In January 1890, they joined forces with the Honinbo family to establish the Central Ki-in, but in April they split off and reverted to the Hoensha. In May 1891, they joined forces with the Central Ki-in, centered around the Bomon family, and the Haisei-kai to establish the Nihon Ki-in.
