A small orchid that grows on rocky cliffs along streams in western Japan. It has beautiful, slightly large crimson-purple flowers. Its Japanese name, Iwachidori, comes from the place where it grows, as the flowers resemble a plover. The stem that grows from the ellipsoid tuberous root is 5-10 cm tall and has one leaf at the bottom. The leaf is lanceolate and 3-5 cm long. In May and June, it produces 1-5 flowers, each about 1 cm in diameter. The sepals and petals are small, about 4 mm long, and somewhat helmet-shaped. The lip petal is large and conspicuous, about 10 mm long, and deeply divided into three lobes, with the central lobe further divided into two lobes at the tip.
