An ethnic group living in the Himalayan mountains in the Indian state of Sikkim, Nepal, Bhutan, and the Indian state of West Bengal. The population is estimated at about 50,000. They are Lamaists and were once widespread in this region, but have been oppressed by Tibetans since the 16th century and are now scattered in the mountain valleys. They practice sibling polyandry and polygamy. Descent is traced through the patrilineal line and they are organized into patrilineal clans. Today, they make a living by farming and raising livestock.
