[Ancient and Middle Ages]
The earliest African explorers were the ancient Egyptians. King Safra of the 5th Dynasty in the 25th century BC sent a fleet to the land of Punt to obtain spices to offer to the gods. The land of Punt is thought to be a part of Somalia. Herodotus, recorded in the 5th century BC, wrote that King Necho II of the 26th Dynasty in the 7th century BC employed the Phoenicians to circumnavigate Africa. Expansion into the interior took place up the Nile. The southern limit of the ancient Egyptian kingdom was the Sixth Cataract, near Khartoum.
