A theatrical term. It refers to a performance style in which a theater, usually an exclusive theater company, performs a set number of plays (repertoire) that changes every night. The repertoire is usually decided for each season. This style has been used in Europe for a long time, in contrast to the long-run system that began in the United States in the 20th century. The theater with the longest tradition is the Comédie-Française, founded in France in 1680, which had an exclusive right to perform the company's repertoire until the Revolution.
