...In West Africa, where there were few European settlers and, with a few exceptions, there were few mineral resources to develop, the activities of colonial capital were limited to the distribution stage, where they purchased tropical products such as groundnuts, palm, coffee, and cocoa produced by Africans and sold European industrial products in return. However, general trading companies like this company were at the core of such commercial activities. This company, along with Société Commerciale de l'Ouest Africain SA (officially renamed SCOA in 1973), a joint venture of Swiss and French capital established in 1907, dominated trade in French West Africa. Although its share decreased after the independence of each country in 1960, the company still has a strong influence in trade and domestic distribution in the region today. ...
