Antifreeze - Futoueki

An alcohol-based liquid with a low freezing point that is used in winter to prevent the coolant in car engines from freezing. When a car's engine coolant is parked outside at night in cold regions, it freezes and expands, cracking the engine block and damaging the radiator. As a result, antifreeze was mixed into the coolant. However, if the coolant was not replaced and the antifreeze removed in the spring, it could cause overheating. In modern cars, antifreeze substances such as ethylene glycol are mixed into the coolant beforehand, and the cooling system is completely sealed, eliminating the need for maintenance.

自動車エンジンの冷却水が凍結しないように冬季に使用するアルコール系の氷点の低い液体。自動車のエンジンの冷却水は、寒冷地で夜間屋外に駐車したりすると凍って膨張し、エンジンブロックを割ったり、ラジエーターを破ったりした。そこで冷却水に不凍液を混入した。しかし春からは冷却水を入れ換えて不凍液を抜かないと、オーバーヒートの原因になった。現代の車では、あらかじめ冷却水にエチレングリコールなどの不凍物質を混入したうえで、冷却系統は完全に密閉されており、メンテナンスを必要としないようになっている。
