Char, René

Char, René
Born June 14, 1907 in Porcluse, Lille-sur-Sorgue
[Died] February 19, 1988. French poet. He first joined the Surrealist movement and wrote poems in an automatistic style that excluded the intervention of reason as much as possible, such as Arsenal (1929) and Le Marteau sans maître (34). He left the group in 1937. During World War II, he joined the anti-German Resistance and established his reputation with the poems he wrote during and after the war. In works such as Seuls demeurent (45), Feuillets d'Hypnos (46), Fureur et Mystère (48), and Les Matinaux (50), his verse is extremely concise and difficult to understand, and he also shows a strong tendency toward masculinity and introspection that is rooted in his native Provence.
