He achieved great success with Les Templiers (1805), but his Les États de Blois, ou la mort du duc de Guise (10) was banned because it infringed on Napoleon's name. He later began studying Provençal and the troubadours, and wrote Lexique roman (6 volumes, 39-44) and other works. He was a member of the Académie Française (07).
