1775‐1862 The last emperor of the Mughal Empire in India. Reigned 1837-58. Like his predecessor, he lived on a pension from the British East India Company and had no real imperial powers. In 1857, during the Indian Mutiny (Sepoy Mutiny), he was supported as emperor by the rebels and declared himself restored to power, but the following year he was arrested by the British and dethroned. He was exiled to Rangoon in Burma, where he died. With his abdication, the Mughal Empire was destroyed in both name and reality, and Britain began to rule India directly.
