...The capital of the Aosta Valley in northwest Italy. Population 36,095 (1990). It is located in a basin at an altitude of 583m, overlooking the Pennine Alps to the north. During the Roman era, it developed as a military garrison, and the city walls, theater, and triumphal arch from that time remain. Currently, it is home to a variety of industries, mainly steelworks, but more than that, it functions as a key point on the main road that runs through Mont Blanc and the Great St. Bernard Pass, and as a tourist base.
