After serving as Minister of Finance and Minister of Justice, he became Prime Minister in 1940 during World War II, but was captured by the Vichy government for advocating war against Germany and sent to Germany. After the war, he became a leader of the right-wing independent republican faction and served as Minister of Finance and Minister of State, advocating European integration.
