Johnson, a leading figure in the London literary world at the time, pointed out his indecisiveness, but regretted his talent, and wrote a sympathetic biography of him in his famous Lives of the Poets (1779-81). Collins' most important work is Odes (1746), in which he freely used the ode form, which later became an important poetic style in the Romantic period, and played a role in opening the curtain to a new era. In particular, Ode to Evening, which contains traces of the neoclassical style in the personification of the evening as a quiet maiden, can be seen, but its fresh sensibility towards nature already pointed to the next era. …
