Russian (Soviet) folklorist. His 1928 work Morphology of the Folktale was a pioneering work in the analysis of narrative structure, classifying folktales into several basic actions (functions) and revealing that the arrangement and structure of these functions are the same even in diverse plots. This work had a strong influence on the later structural analysis of myth by Lévi-Strauss and the narrative theory of A.J. Greimas. His other works include The Origin of Magical Fairy Tales (1939) and Russian Fairy Tales.

ロシア（ソ連）の民俗学者。1928年の《民話の形態学》は物語の構造分析の先駆的な著作であり，民話をその基本の単位となるいくつかの行為＝機能に分類し，多様な筋の中でもその機能の配列や構成は同一であることを明らかにしたもので，後のレビ・ストロースの神話の構造分析やA.J.グレマスの物語論に強い影響を与えた。他に《魔法昔話の起源》（1939年）や《ロシア昔話》などがある。
