A Protestant organization descended from the Hussites (J. Hus). Also known as the Bohemian Brethren. Founded in 1457 under the influence of Chelczyk, who advocated non-violence, freedom, and equality, it had 100,000 members by the beginning of the 16th century and contributed to the Czech translation of the Bible. Comenius was one of its members. After 1620, they were forced into exile, and some of them went to Saxony in Germany, where they were protected by Count Zinzendorf. They called themselves the Moravian Brethren and played an important role in Pietism. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
