Akazawa Copper Mine

Japanese: 赤沢銅山 - あかさわどうざん
Akazawa Copper Mine

…Since the completion of the Joban Line (then the Japan Railway Coast Line) in the 1890s, coal mining became active due to its proximity to the Keihin Market, and for about 70 years until it was abandoned due to the energy revolution, it had a major impact on the economy of the northern part of the prefecture. Also, the Akazawa Copper Mine, which was opened in the early modern period, did not produce sufficient results during the Edo period, but it developed after being renamed Hitachi Mine in 1905. The establishment of a large-scale smelter sparked the launch of the electrical machinery industry in the 1910s, which became independent as Hitachi Ltd. in 1920. …

[Hitachi Mine]

…The ore minerals are chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite, but the average copper content is relatively low at about 1.5%, and the sulfur content is about 20%. [Umetaro Yamaguchi]
[History]
Formerly known as the Akazawa Copper Mine, it was one of Japan's four largest copper mines. It was discovered in 1591 (Tensho 19) and is said to have been developed by Hitachi feudal lord Satake Yoshishige. Although it was operated several times during the early and mid-Meiji periods under the Mito domain, it never saw any development due to problems with polluted water (pollution of farmland by toxic mine water).
