Luciola lateralis (English name)

Coleoptera, Lampyridae. Body length 7-10 mm. Body black, covered with short hairs of the same color. When viewed from behind, most of the head is hidden under the front edge of the prothorax. Compound eyes are large, antennae filamentous. Prothorax is pale red, densely punctuated, with a broad black stripe in the middle. Each elytra has four longitudinal ridges. The two distal abdominal segments are yellowish-white light-emitting organs. Larvae live in rice paddies and marshes, feeding on freshwater snails such as the Japanese river snail. Inhabits Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, the Kuril Islands, Korea, and northern China. Similar to the Genji firefly, but smaller, and easily distinguished by the thick black stripe in the middle of the prothorax.
