Le Quy Don

Japanese: レ・クイ・ドン(英語表記)Le Quy Don
Le Quy Don
1726‐83
A scholar and politician of the late Le Dynasty in Vietnam. Born into a scholar-scholar family in Thai Binh Province. After passing the scholar-scholar exam in 1752, he played an active role as a capable military and civil administrator during the reign of Le Hien Thong (Le Xianzong, reigned 1740-86), a time of great turmoil caused by the Le Duy Mat Rebellion. He made a name for himself in 1760 for his correspondence with the Qing Dynasty, and in 1777, when Hue fell, he investigated the territorial registries of the former Quang Nam Dynasty, making a contribution to the inspection and improvement of local politics. He was also the greatest encyclopedist of the late Le Dynasty, and his many works, including the 30-volume Dai Viet Tongshi (History of Vietnam), 6-volume Miscellaneous Records of the Borders, 4-volume Records of the Northern Envoys, 45-volume Records of the Observations of the World, and 4-volume Records of the Relations of the Arts in Vietnam, are all important sources for understanding pre-modern Vietnam.
